How does a Traditional Ayurvedic Cleanse Work?

 

Week 1: Set the Stage — Assess, Prepare & Personalize

Before beginning your cleanse, it’s essential to pause and connect with your body’s unique needs. An Ayurvedic cleanse is never one-size-fits-all—it’s designed to support you specifically.

During week one, you will tune in, gather supplies, and prepare your system for a smooth and effective experience. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how your unique constitution (prakruti) and current imbalance (vikruti) shape your cleanse, what your symptoms are revealing about your digestive fire (agni) and toxin levels (ama), and why proper preparation is essential for safety and success. You’ll also begin shifting your mindset and daily rhythm to support the healing process ahead. This week includes:

  • Ayurvedic consultation to assess your current state of digestion and ama accumulation to customize your cleanse experience
  • Cleanse kit: recipes, shopping list, daily routine plan
  • Start pre-cleansing by reducing processed foods + stimulants
  • Selection and ordering of herbs to be taken during the cleanse
  • Scheduling of Ayurvedic therapies to support your cleanse (warm oil massage, herbal steam therapy, shirodhara or shiro pichu for calming the mind, etc.)


Week 2: Clean-Up — Ease Into Cleansing

As you move into week two, we’ll explore how your daily habits and routines should shift to support the process—everything from when and what you eat to how you care for your body and mind. Cleansing isn’t just physical; it can bring emotional and mental changes too. We’ll discuss the signs to watch for that indicate your system is actively detoxifying. This phase is about creating space—not just in your body, but in your mind and lifestyle—to allow deep healing to unfold. This week includes:

  • Transitioning to a warm, grounding diet of easy-to-digest meals
  • Introducing self-care rituals like tongue scraping, oil massage, meditation, breathwork, etc.
  • Daily detox teas customized to your cleanse for ama removal
  • Beginning gentle movement or walks to support circulation and elimination
  • Creating time and space in your schedule to honor the cleanse and how to gain the support of others around you
  • Everything you need to know before heading into week 3 of active cleansing

Week 3: Active Cleanse — Simplify, Release, Reset

This is the heart of the cleanse—a time for deep internal focus and release. You’ll simplify your meals even further, transitioning to a monodiet of kitchari, a nourishing blend of rice, mung dal, and digestive spices that gives your system a much-needed rest while gently detoxifying without depleting. This phase may also include internal oleation with the consumption of herbalized ghee, followed by a gentle purgation day.  These practices help draw toxins from deeper tissues and move them out of the body. Close monitoring and personalized support during this phase help ensure you feel safe and steady throughout the process. This week you will:

  • Following a monodiet of kitchari, cooked veggies, and detoxifying tea
  • Use ghee and herbal support for deeper cleansing (if appropriate)
  • Prepare for intestinal purgation (if ghee is used)
  • Reduce distractions and remove all unnecessary activities
  • Engage in Ayurvedic therapies like oil massage, steaming, etc. (optional)


NOTE: Cleansing can be done without the ghee/purgation option. Ayurvedic therapies are optional and not included; please ask for a personal recommendation.


Week 4: Rebuild & Restore — Integrate and Rejuvenate

With toxins cleared, your body is ready to rebuild. This phase focuses on nourishment and restoring long-term balance. You’ll begin reintroducing foods slowly and mindfully, paying attention to how your body responds. We’ll explore rasayana (rejuvenative) practices that help restore energy and support tissue repair, and you’ll learn how to create a sustainable daily rhythm that helps you maintain the progress you’ve made. This week you will: 

  • Gradually reintroducing food sources while observing responses
  • Using rasayana herbs and foods for nourishment
  • Identifying new habits to keep and plan out your post-cleanse lifestyle

Common signs you may benefit from a cleanse include bloating, gas, constipation, brain fog, fatigue, poor sleep, food cravings, skin issues, or a coated tongue. You may also notice feeling unmotivated, irritable, or disconnected from your body. These are all signs that your agni (digestive fire) may be low and ama (toxins) could be building up in your system.  


An Ayurvedic cleanse can be helpful any time your digestion or energy feels off, or when you're feeling mentally and physically sluggish.  A seasonal cleanse is also recommended in Ayurveda as a way to reset the body’s natural rhythms, especially during seasonal transitions like spring or fall. If you’re unsure, I offer a free 15-minute consultation to help you decide if a cleanse is right for you. 


Unlike many modern detoxes that rely on juice fasting or aggressive protocols, an Ayurvedic cleanse is gentle, nourishing, and personalized. It focuses on strengthening digestion (agni), removing toxins (ama), and restoring balance to both body and mind. Rather than depriving the body, we use warm, easy-to-digest foods, herbal support, and self-care practices to guide the body through a natural detox process that’s sustainable and supportive—not extreme.  


Most people are surprised to find that they feel nourished and satisfied during the cleanse. You’ll be eating warm, grounding foods like kitchari (a blend of rice, mung dal, and spices), cooked vegetables, and supportive teas. The goal is to simplify your diet—not restrict it—so your digestive system can rest and reset while still getting the nourishment it needs.  


 Many people do experience weight loss during the cleanse, but that’s not the primary goal. In Ayurveda, weight gain is often linked to poor digestion, toxin buildup (ama), and imbalances in the body's natural rhythms. This cleanse works by strengthening your digestive fire (agni), reducing cravings, supporting healthy elimination, and bringing your body back into balance—all of which can naturally lead to shedding excess weight. Any weight loss that occurs is typically a result of improved digestion, reduced inflammation, and a healthier relationship with food and routine.
